classics: zombie

16-Sep-09

here’s what i took from kaiser penguin’s zombie recipe comparison: a zombie is a complex, carefully proportioned mixture of anything i want to put in it.
i had a hard time finding passionfruit juice, so i used santa cruz ‘passionfruit nectar’ which is a pretty sorry substitute.
i also didn’t feel like buying any 151 just [...]

trip report: heaven’s dog

21-Aug-09

visited jackie patterson at heaven’s dog.
cocktail 1: tequila, mezcal, allspice, ango
cocktail 2: rum, ginger, lime, egg white thing
cocktail 3: gin, lime thing (comped)
the cocktails were very good, but not as complex as the drinks i’ve had by her at the cuesa gatherings nor (seemingly) her competition-winning drinks.
i did get to talk to her [...]

working on: last word, o-positive; forthcoming experiments

17-Aug-09

last word variant
1/2 oz gin
1/2 oz lime
1/4 oz maraschino
1/4 oz green chartreuse
1/4 oz syrup
this works. am thinking you can sub lychee or ikea elderflower syrup for the simple syrup. working title “ellipsis, lychee” omg im a dork

o-positive (renamed because ‘penta-tonic’ makes it sound like either it contains tonic water, or that its made [...]

recent drinks

28-Jul-09

swizzle from cafe rouge. rum, falernum, lime, pineapple, ango. was ok. velvet falernum is pretty lame as it turns out.
tina modotti from pizzaiolo. tequila, grapefruit, lime, aperol. really good. maybe i need to procure some aperol.

trip report: pizzaiolo; experiment: rangpur pegu; flashcards

18-Jul-09

stopped by pizzaiolo after running some errands as i “just happened” to be in the area.
sfizio alla pesca – rum, lemon, peach, lemon verbena syrup
andina – pisco, lime, drambuie + something else i forgot to write down, maybe orange bitters
of note, cate used a half a peach per drink. that’s commitment!

as per [...]

experiment: pineapple daiquiri, peach daiquiri; neighborhood fruit trees; pickles

22-Jun-09

2 oz rum
1 oz red grapefruit
1/2 oz lime
version #3: 1″ x 1″ x 2″ very ripe pineapple core, cut into pieces
version #4: 1/8th of a small ripe peach
1 tsp sugar
short drizzle maraschino liqueur
4 drops grapefruit bitters
muddle fruit with sugar. combine remaining ingredients, shake without ice for 20 seconds, shake with ice for 20 seconds. [...]

experiment: mango daiquiri

20-Jun-09

my updated strawberry daiquiri was such a success, i thought maybe the formula could work with any fruit. here was attempt #2:
2 oz rum
1 1/2 oz grapefruit juice
1/2 oz lime juice
mango, approx 1″ square
1 tsp sugar
short drizzle of maraschino liqueur
was this any good? not really, but input, not formula or mixer, was the [...]

trip report: pizzaiolo

12-Jun-09

in defiance of my previous ‘realization’, i decided to not be a penis-flavored drunk-driving pox on society and instead rely on public transportation.
well, it might have less to do with an ethical epiphany and more to do with the discovery that ac transit runs more frequently than they did in my youth. [...]

trip report: pizzaiolo

29-May-09

problem: you want to booze it up at an establishment not walkable from your house. some solutions: drive drunk (morally questionable), public transportation (time consuming), cab ($$$ consuming), designated driver (a drag for the driver/i dont have enough (teetotaler) friends).
i figured out (took me long enough) another solution: sober up before [...]

recipe: corn n stormy; salutations of the rad

17-May-09

2 oz dark rum
1/2 oz lime
3/8-3/4 oz falernum (depends on sweetness, my last batch was pretty dilute)
1 coin ginger
3 drops angostura bitters
muddle ginger, combine remaining ingredients, shake with ice, double strain.
minor story from cocktail night, one bartender (male) greeted another (female) with “hey, mama!” despite not being billy dee williams, he totally pulled [...]

pineapple corn n oil

13-Apr-09

1 oz pineapple-vodka bounce
1 oz dark rum
1 oz lime
1 oz falernum
not bad, but it had a taste-illusion (what is that word?) of salt.

experiment: persimmon-ginger-redcurry

27-Mar-09

i have gone too far.
seriously, this went too far.
in everything i do–life, cooking, programming–i am terrible at conducting experiments. i forget about control groups. i change multiple variables at the same time. i make large batches of unproven recipes. why do i do this? why must i live [...]

experiment: brown-butter-raisin mai tai take 2

22-Mar-09

2 oz white or gold rum
1 oz lime
3/4 oz brown butter and toasted almond orgeat
1 T raisins or currants
this is almost just right. i love the toasted almond flavor (i put the almonds in with the butter while it was browning), but it is too strong; i taste little to no brown butter. [...]
