1/4 oz lime
muddled tangerine slice
dash orange bitters
lemon twist

five-spice-makrut-leaf syrup

1 T five-spice
1 cup sugar
1 cup water
10 lime leaves, chopped

toast the spices over medium-low heat. add remaining ingredients, bring to a low boil. turn down to a simmer for five minutes. take off heat, let cool for a few minutes, strain out solids.

this drink is really excellent. flavors are well represented and balanced.

the five spice syrup would make a nice alternative to falernum.

juhu palm: gin, coconut milk, kaffir lime leaf, birds eye chili, spanked curry leaf. very good, but not any better than what you would expect from kaffir lime and coconut. was kind of like a spiked tom yum gai. also had a weird wet-towel aftertaste. maybe the glass was wiped down with a bar rag or something.

mood indigo: bourbon, jackfruit marmalade, angostura bitters, champagne. wasn’t a fan. heavy on the bourbon, exoticism undetectable.

i’d like to go back someday. though, as is always the case with sf restaurants…there are too many places to try: nopa, range, rye, beretta. smugglers cove when it opens (i am currently battling “humuhumu” for drunken puzzle-solving supremacy). i’d like to go back to bourbon and branch and alembic. and i’d like to visit jackie p again, wherever she might be on a given night. [edit: plus: alex smith at thirsty bear] all while keeping my seat at pizzaiolo warm. whew! can i make the time?

this drink is a blatant ripoff of the kaffir fling, by david wolowidnyk of west restaurant in vancouver, bc. his version includes cinnamon sprinkled through a blowtorch which looks and smells pretty awesome.

my mom loves this drink. qed.

thai kamikaze

2 oz vodka
1 oz lime juice
0.75-1 oz orgeat
2-5 kaffir lime leaves
2 coins ginger

muddle lime leaves one at a time in a shaker. add ginger and muddle. add the remaining ingredients with ice, and shake until very cold. pour through a fine strainer.

slacker orgeat

1 part almond milk
1 part sugar
orange peel, pith removed, at least 1″ x 1″ per cup of milk, more if you like

lay the peel pith side up, and use a sharp thin knife to cut away all the pith, as though you are whittling.

bring the almond milk to a simmer, remove from heat. add orange peel. after the mixture cools down a little, pour it into a jar with the sugar, and shake until the sugar dissolves. chill and shake before using.
