had a couple cocktails at a cute neighborhood place in denver called venue bistro. i don’t know if i was in the right mood or what, but i really enjoyed our dinner despite it having some clunky flaws. i think i liked that everything seemed well-intentioned. aka “made with love”.
cocktail 1: stone fruit [...]
the washington post linked to this blog!
interesting premise; apparently, jason wilson and i share a fondness for updating unfashionable cocktails.
daaaaamn! check out this basement bar in my aunt and uncle’s house:
i’m so fn envious. could totally cool out here with a couple harvey wallbangers and some grand funk or three dog* on the 8-track.
* these are the only 70s bands i know
i was on cocktail duty for a family sushi party last night.
2 oz lillet
0.75 oz grapefruit vodka (i put half the peel and flesh of a grapefruit in a pint mason jar, filled with vodka, sat for two days)
this is a good proportion for me. man-drinkers might reverse the proportions (the standard [...]
visited jackie patterson at heaven’s dog.
cocktail 1: tequila, mezcal, allspice, ango
cocktail 2: rum, ginger, lime, egg white thing
cocktail 3: gin, lime thing (comped)
the cocktails were very good, but not as complex as the drinks i’ve had by her at the cuesa gatherings nor (seemingly) her competition-winning drinks.
i did get to talk to her [...]
1/2 oz lime
1/4 oz apfel korn (apple liqueur)
1/4 oz ikea elderflower syrup
dash green chartreuse
my uncle asked for a light cocktail. this is what i came up with. it didn’t quite work, too much lime.
i’m not ready to spring for a whole bottle of charbay grapefruit, so i put 4 oz of cheap vodka in a jar with three long ribbons of red grapefruit peel for about four days. excellent.
then i mixed about 1 part grapefruit vodka to 3 or 4 parts lillet. excellenter.
improved sunrise take #2
1/2 oz tequila
1/2 oz lillet
1/4 oz luxardo orange
this is not very good at all. made drinkable (but not good) with a couple dashes of lemon.
here’s the bourbon and branch ‘improved sunrise‘.
loma bonita burner take #2
1 oz tequila
1/4 oz lemon
1/4 oz syrup
1 chunk pineapple
1 sliver jalepeno
its possible that the jalepeno had been [...]
draft 1:
1/2 oz pineapple-jalepeno infused tequila
1/2 oz california chardonnay
1/4 oz lemon
1/4 syrup
1 chunk pineapple
1 sliver jalepeno
too much wine, too much sweetener. heat level just right. has promise.
last word variant
1/2 oz gin
1/2 oz lime
1/4 oz maraschino
1/4 oz green chartreuse
1/4 oz syrup
this works. am thinking you can sub lychee or ikea elderflower syrup for the simple syrup. working title “ellipsis, lychee” omg im a dork

what a beautiful place. on a clear day (like today) you can see san francisco laid out from tip to tail.
here are my tasting notes.
aqua perfecta pear eau de vie – intense pear aroma, some spice. pure alcohol flavor.
aqua perfecta framboise eau de vie – slightly earthy/off/vegetal/funky, but stirring, like inhaling the [...]

as mentioned in a previous post, cuesa has a farmer’s market cocktail night every quarter/season. tonight was their night of summer cocktails. overall, the drinks this time around were much better than last time; nothing was bad, many were very good.
favorites:
green and orange (jackie patterson) – green chartreuse, lime, carrot, honey, cantaloupe, cilantro [...]

muddled a quarter of a medium-large yellow peach, tart but flavorful. mixed in 3 oz of punt e mes, double strained into a jar as the base mixture.
then mixed a bunch of mini-cocktails using 1/2 oz of the base mixture and 1/4 oz of a spirit. the spirits i used and my tasting [...]

had three cocktails at nopa:
escondido romano – chipotle vodka, cynar, dimmi, cava
valkyrie – aquavit, aperol, vermouth (dolin blanc), sunshine (saffron) bitters
sherry shrub – manzanilla sherry, huckleberry shrub
i admired these more than i liked them. what i mean is: none were boring. all were perfectly balanced. the flavors were new, interesting. but [...]

part 3 in the “better know your neighborhood bars” series…
jp, kue, and i went to this place for dinner. i knew from a previous scouting that the cocktail menu was two parts boring one part nightmare: one of the drinks contains spiced apple puree (from a bottle no less) which, for reasons posted previously, [...]
pear liqueur experiments #2 and #3
1/2 oz pear liqueur
1/4 oz cachaca
1/4 oz lime
#2: 2 drops ango
#3: short drizzle of maraschino
#2 needed a dash of sugar. #3 was balanced, though too much maraschino for my taste. probably just right for the sophisticated cocktail enthusiast.
ango and maraschino would probably work together.

went on a shopping spree at ledgers and bevmo, picked up some new things:
– regan’s orange bitters
– green chartreuse
– j pear liqueur
– sagitaba cachaca
– fever tree tonic water
gin and tonic
2 oz hendricks
2 oz fever tree
i wasn’t impressed with fever tree, cate’s tonic is far superior.
this drink was improved [...]
