leftovers; mediocrity; the sidecar

notes:
- the leftover margarita was undrinkably bitter.
- a leftover gin-elderflower-lemon cocktail was less bitter and more smooth. maybe just more diluted?
- went to a mid-scale, B-for-effort-C-for-delivery mexican place. ordered the ‘horchatini’ and ‘prickly pear margarita’ even though i knew i was asking for trouble. noted with disdain (for myself, mostly) that they cost as much as the drinks at pizzaiolo.

not sure what was wrong with them, or how to explain what was wrong. maybe something like: the presence of alcohol didn’t elevate the flavors? basically just tasted like spiked drinks.

sfgate article from earlier this year on the sidecar

i made a batch of sidecars tonight at a family gathering and got many people drunk. mom really liked it, which surprised me. maybe brandy is her thing.

the end product was good. i used hiram walker triple sec on the recommendation of drinkhacker.com and paul masson grande amber on the recommendation of david wondrich. the triple sec straight up is inferior to luxardo triplum. but it worked fine in the cocktail.
