part 2 in the ongoing series, ‘better know your neighborhood bars’
last night i went to a new-ish bar down the street. its part of a restaurant that has been around for awhile, but the bar itself only recently went from beer-n-wine to full. i asked the bartender for a recommendation from the ’specialty [...]
tried to integrate peach into two cocktails:
almond-peach old fashioned
2 oz bourbon
1/4 small peach
1 tsp amaretto
2 dashes angostura bitters
1 dash peach bitters
this didn’t work for me nor did it work for anyone but stuntman b who is a bourbon slut. i tried to patch with a muddled cherry which was an improvement. it added [...]
my rickhouse trip is summarized on yelp.
after i left (without getting my drink), i soul-searched a little, thinking, was i wrong to be upset? i try to be an understanding person. bartenders at hoppin, douchey bars don’t have too easy a job. maybe it pays well, who knows, but it is still [...]

swizzle from cafe rouge. rum, falernum, lime, pineapple, ango. was ok. velvet falernum is pretty lame as it turns out.
tina modotti from pizzaiolo. tequila, grapefruit, lime, aperol. really good. maybe i need to procure some aperol.

the owner of the rangpur lime tree said i could harvest to my heart’s content. i think i took down about three pounds today, there’s about 20 times as much left on the tree.
2 oz cachaca
half a rangpur lime, sliced
2 tsp sugar
muddle limes with sugar, add cachaca, shake with ice, double strain.
this is awesome. [...]
after round one of experimenting, here is my manhattan recipe:
1 oz rye (rittenhouse)
1 oz citrus-vanilla-infused bourbon (evan williams)
3/4 oz sweet vermouth (noilly prat)
1/4 oz cherry liqueur (luxardo)
1 dash ango
orange twist (this is probably wrong)
[edit: i forgot to add, this is excellent]
what’s so wrong with the cosmo? the violet hour shuns them. so does bourbon and branch. the other day at pizzaiolo, some guy ordered a grey goose cosmo and cate said ‘we don’t have grey goose and we don’t do cosmos’ in a kind of mean and scary way! i pooped [...]

stopped by pizzaiolo after running some errands as i “just happened” to be in the area.
sfizio alla pesca – rum, lemon, peach, lemon verbena syrup
andina – pisco, lime, drambuie + something else i forgot to write down, maybe orange bitters
of note, cate used a half a peach per drink. that’s commitment!
…
as per [...]

word came down that scott beattie was taking a shift at clock bar, and so i made my way there. turned out he wasn’t mixing any of his drinks…he was mostly just working from the standard menu. this was only slightly disappointing, as i’ve been wanting to hit clock bar anyway.
i was as [...]

five:
basil gimlet – really delicious but the basil could have looked better. just for cosmetic reasons if nothing else.
unnamed drink – bardude comped me a drink in exchange for being a guinea pig. a brandy sour made with vanilla sugar, with an aged rum float. excellent, though there was a slight [...]

notes:
- the leftover margarita was undrinkably bitter.
- a leftover gin-elderflower-lemon cocktail was less bitter and more smooth. maybe just more diluted?
- went to a mid-scale, B-for-effort-C-for-delivery mexican place. ordered the ‘horchatini’ and ‘prickly pear margarita’ even though i knew i was asking for trouble. noted with disdain (for myself, mostly) that they [...]
