spring farmer’s market cocktail night

wednesday i hit cuesa.org’s spring farmer’s market cocktail night at the ferry building. had a good time; the food was awesome this time around: 4505 pork rinds, burgers from market bar, nduja from boccalone, pate from absinthe (jamie lauren in the hizz-whuuut?), and pork belly bao from heaven’s dog.

i was a little disappointed with the drinks. one problem: strawberries were overused. strawberry is one of those flavors too strongly associated with shitty frozen daiquiris, and in fact that’s what most of the cocktails tasted like. i was particularly disappointed with the strawberried drinks from the super-nice victoria d’amato and the super-nice-and-zaftiglicious sierra zimei, because i liked their drinks so well from last season.

another problem: each table was assigned a base spirit; at one the assignation was bacardi. owee mommy.

overall, most of the drinks were just not very good, and a few were undrinkable. the horriblest was the ‘cuesa cup’: muddled strawberry, rum, some blueberries, mint, layered with ice and topped with safeway ginger ale. cuesa should really be more careful letting people put their name on an assflavored soda.

the highlights:

- dacquiri des herbs from jackie patterson. batiste rum, lemon, honey, sage. initial sip tasted overboozy, but the second sip got me up to speed.

- something from brian macgregor. rum, ginger, blackpepper, falernum, lemon. light, tasty, spicy, and delicious.

- raspberry summer from erick castro. rum, ginger, raspberry, lemon, angostura bitters. i’m not a raspberry fan but dude made it work.

in other news, i’m back on my horse, having made a batch of cocktails that i (a) tested first with a single portion (b) tasted after mixing the batch. gosling’s dark rum, lime, falernum, muddled ginger. kind of a dark n stormy n corn n oil. a corn n stormy.

it is delicious.

that damn giant bottle of shiso-leaf disaster is still in the fridge. i hope to be emotionally ready to play with it, soon. just takes an open mind and low expectations.

can be said for so many things.

One Trackback/Pingback
